Why Gluten Free Food Is More Expensive? How to Get Gluten Free Food In India?

Hello my Glutenfree Buddies!!Hope you are fine.Today I went for Gluten Free Grocery shopping(Online).and I find out that all Gluten Free Food Items are so much like twice or three times costlier then normal food.
So I was wondering why Gluten Free Food Is More Expensive?I Try to find out the reasons and that all I am going to share with you today.

Do you know Overall, Americans will spend an estimated $7 billion this year on foods labeled gluten-free, according to consumer research. On average, gluten-free products were 242% more expensive than regular products.

In 2010, gluten-free product sales reached more than $2.6 billion and are projected to exceed $5 billion by 2015, according to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity (collectively referred to as gluten-related disorders), increasing diagnoses, advancing research and improving the quality of life for those on a life-long gluten-free.

According to a research scope of Gluten Free Food Market, The Gluten Free Food market size is project to reach USD 3444.3 Million by 2026 ,from USD 3291.0 million in 2020 ,at a CAGR of 4.4% during 2021-2026.Find research

Why Gluten Free Food Is More Expensive?

1 - The price of a product depends on its supply and demand. The market for gluten-free diet products, in comparison to “normal” grain products containing gluten which are produced for the wider population, is small. Yet, the higher price for these products primarily comes from the complex form of production. The Codex alimentarius commission set a new threshold value for gluten-free food in 2008. Such products may accordingly contain a maximum of 20ppm (20ppm= 20mg/kg, ppm = parts per million). These statutory gluten threshold values require extremely strict monitoring and special precautionary measures for delivery, production and packaging of the food items. However, only such strict quality assurance systems guarantee high product safety. Raw materials and manufactured products are continuously subject to inspection and are examined with regard to their gluten content and other allergens. The production of qualitatively high-class and reliably gluten-free food is fully automated and uses the most modern technology. Rice and also Maize, raw materials that are mainly used in gluten-free food instead of wheat, are in addition more expensive than wheat.

2 - Gluten-free products often are made with ingredients that are more costly, such as brown rice flour, amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat.

3 - To Avoid Cross-Contamination

cross-contamination is always a possibility. Therefore, bakeries producing products labeled gluten-free must pay to have the facilities thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis. They must also make their products in a facility that is dedicated to the highest standards. Moreover, every batch should be tested for allergy reasons. Additional staffing, special equipment and these additional steps are just a few of the reasons gluten-free foods come with a higher price tag than other foods.

4 - Gluten Free Certifications

Furthermore, another reason why gluten-free foods tend to be costlier is due to the number of certification requires to bear the gluten free label.

These may include one or more of the following:

  • Gluten Free Certification Organisation(GFCO)
  • National Foundation for Celiac Awareness Gluten Free Certification Program(NFCA)
  • The International Certification Services(ICS)
  • Celiac Sprue Association Seal of Recognition(CSA)
  • Gluten Free Standard Organization(GFSA)
  • According to the FDA(U.S. Food and Drug Administration) rules has required that claims on food labels.Rule specifies, among other criteria, that any foods that carry the label “gluten-free,” “no gluten,” “free of gluten,” or “without gluten” must contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. This level is the lowest that can be reliably detected in foods using scientifically validated analytical methods. Other countries and international bodies use these same criteria, as most people with celiac disease can tolerate foods with very small amounts of gluten

5 - At my nearest grocery store, rice flour is 10 times the cost of wheat flour, and xantham gum is 10 times. A recipe where the main costs is the flour will be much more expensive with rice flour instead of wheat.

6 - A gluten-free loaf of bread may have more than 20 ingredients in its recipe to compensate for the lack of wheat – and more ingredients often means higher cost (Credit: Alamy)

These days, ancient grains are all the rage, but there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the more basic options such as corn, rice, and gluten-free oats, which are cheaper.

So How You Can Save Money Being Gluten Free?

In a country like India you might find bit more difficult to buy them from markets. Here there is not much awareness about celiac and Gluten intolerance .so its not easy to find a shop or a factory outlet from where you can buy cheap products. But Still you manage to find some of them and regularly purchase Gluten Free Food that you cant make home.(Means don't have proper recipes) like bread and cakes. So from this stores you can buy GF Foods (Not much Cheap but ok once in a weak)
